Apple has to dip into its huge piggy bank after losing a patent infringement case against Nevada-based VPN company, VirnetX.
The U.S. district court in Texas found Apple guilty of infringing four patents with its video conferencing tool, Facetime. VirnetX was seeking $700 million from the case but Apple was only ordered to pay $368 million.
VirnetX accused Apple engineers of disregarding research of patent technologies while designing FaceTime, which debuted on the iPhone 4 in 2010. An Apple representative said the company didn’t infringe on any patents, and that if the technologies in question were at all used, they were “a small part of very large, complex products.”ANothe
Apple is not the only company cutting checks for VirnetX. Back in 2010 the company scored a victory against Microsoft for $200 million. Currently, VirnetX has patent cases pending against Cisco, Avaya and Siemens.
