The late Florida rapper XXXTentacion has been ruled ineligible for the 2019 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, Complex reports and Pitchfork can confirm.

One possible reason for XXXTentacion being ruled ineligible is because his breakthrough debut 17 was released in August 2017 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart on September 16. The nomination eligibility period lasts from October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2018. Rules for Grammy Best New Artist eligibility stipulate that the artist “must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the eligibility period.”

It’s also possible he was deemed ineligible due to the amount of music he released within the eligibility period. The rules stipulate that artists must have released “no more than 30 singles/tracks or three albums” in the year-long span. As the primary artist, XXXTentacion had 24 songs released during the induction period—his album ?, his posthumous Lil Peep collaboration, and his Ghetto Christmas Carol EP. As a featured artist, he appeared on at least seven other songs, including tracks by Lil Wayne (on Tha Carter V), Ski Mask the Slump God, Ronny J, BlackBagLa & Momoh, Sizzla, Craig Xen, and Lil Vidi. Other artists who have been deemed ineligible for the 2019 Best New Artist Grammy include Post Malone and Cardi B.

XXXTentacion was shot and killed in Florida in June 2018. He was 20 years old. Following his death, he posthumously broke numerous streaming records. In addition, his song “SAD!” became the first single to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart posthumously since the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” in 1997.

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of XXXTentacion. The case is ongoing. At the time of his death, X was facing numerous legal charges, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering. In addition, he faced 15 charges harassing and tampering with a witness or victim. XXXTentacion had pled not guilty and frequently denied the allegations in interviews and on social media.
